Penang - land of jeruk!

Jeruk or preserved fruits are synonym with Penang. No visitors to Penang will go home without jeruk in their luggage.  It may not be the healthiest food but still jeruk is a must-buy.

It must be the most popular jeruk of all.

The green and red ones at the back are kinda scary though...

 If I were asked what's my fave jeruk,

my answer would be the kedondong.

Not the green version though but the yellow ones at the back.

Rasanya tu yang paling sedap pada tekakku...

And I quite like the preserved papaya too

especially the spicy version. Sedapp!!! :)))

 

 

The famous Pulau Aman's prawn noodles....

Guys, have been away up north for quite some time.  Hence the 'deafening' silence from my blog.  So, here I am again.  Thanks to my friend, Pae, I got to sample the famous prawn noodles (mee udang) of Pulau Aman.  Pulau Aman is situated off Simpang Ampat town.  Somewhere there laa.... :D

Anyway, here's the mee udang.  MEMANG POWER!!!

Am not really a fan of anything prawn-y

but this prawn noodle is simply delicious.

Enak banget!!

And here's the proof.

Okay, now let's talk a little bit about Pulau Aman.  Nothing much to talk about actually.  It's a very small island.. maybe famous sebab mee udang dia je kot.  First heard of Pulau Aman when another Penang friend, Zila, went there to makan its mee udang.  So, naturally I was curious.

 Pulau Aman - ada south and north rupanya.

 Some of their local products.

Salted fish, belacan (fish paste),

keropoks and others.

Plenty of pokok sukun here.

The biggest and cleanest resto on the island.

 Besides the prawn mee,

we also ordered kuay tiaw prawn.



 And 'shlimp flied lice'... hihi..

again reminiscing good ol' kalamazaoo days....

 And ate some nasi lemak bought before getting on the ferry.

Ayoo..takut tak cukup makan ni...

 Mak cik dan adik2 ni masak kuih kapit (love letters).

The love letters are fresh and crispy and delicious.

Memang sedap, Pae. Mucho gracias, amigo!

They also rear goats and plant veges.

The veges are really very healthy.

Well, the trip to Pulau Aman was a good experience.  Once in 20 years is plenty. But it's made worth it because of the wonderful company of  a good friend and the prawn mee.  Simply marvellous.... !

Berpicnic di Lubuk Manggis, Hulu Langat

To spice things up a little bit (excuse the pun), I'm gonna do some posting on places of interests, starting from my own 'backyard', so to speak.  Memang banyak tempat-tempat menarik kat kampung saya ni.

So, the first attraction to be honored will be Lubuk Manggis.  But you won't find any manggis (mangosteen) here...  (=

It's located about (about ya.. tak sure brapa km ni sebenarnya) 40km from KL.  It may not be as famous as its 'sister', the Sungai Congkak, but it does have its own charm.

   There are quite a few 'chalets' along the river.

 Shallow and calm water.

Suitable for bathing especially for the kids.

 A bit choppy here because of the boulders in the river.

  My son and his friends enjoying the cold water.

Memang sejuk... brrrr.....

 Plenty of rocks and boulders here.

 Orang berpicnic on both sides of the river.

Lubuk Manggis is not as busy and crowded as

 Sungai Congkak and Sungai Gabai.

So, it's more relaxing to swim and picnic here.

Quite pathetic actually 

but I'm proud of my pokok jambu air. 

The tree is about 3 feet tall

and the fruit is barely half feet from the ground.

Subhanallah.

Ber-mandy di Wadi Hardramawt!!

Arab (or rather middle eastern) foods are the in thing now.  One can find kedai Arab at almost every corner  (well, I might be exaggerating a little bit but I guess you know what I mean).

  
So needless to say, I've joined the camel bandwagon too and have fallen in love with Arab foods.  Sedappp!  So, I'm gonna feature a few middle-eastern makan places.  The first one (but definitely not the best in my mid-eastern foods list) is Wadi Hadramawt in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

 The restaurant is located right in a middle of a used car show room.

Not a very conducive place to have a restaurant, eh?

Tak sahlah kalau tak order mandy rice kalau pergi kedai Arab kan.

We order lamb mandy...

...and chicken mandy.

Verdict : I've tasted better and I've tasted worst. err....

Besides the mandy rice, 

hummus is another must-have.

I love hummus. 

 But unfortunately they serve their hummus

with this flat, very dry and thin bread.

I'm quite disappointed. Very, in fact!

Their Arab tea bolehlah tahan. 

Not bad. Quite nice and refreshing.

 

My friend also ordered this bean-y dish.

Am not a fan, though.

Bolehlah....  

  

 

They claim they are a Yemeni restaurant.

Hence the picture of some forest in Yemen.

 So, Wadi Hadramawt is a so-so place to eat.
